New tariff policy aims to ‘empower’ the consumer
Posted Date:-9/10/2019 6:40:37 PM

Power Minister RK Singh has said that the government will soon introduce a new electricity tariff policy with a focus on empowering consumers. Talking to All India Radio in Hyderabad, he said, the new electricity rate policy is a pioneer as the government is introducing the consumer rights bill in the power sector for the first time.
Mr. Singh said, the rights include 24X7 power supply to consumers and in case of any load shedding, the distribution companies (discoms) will be fined and credited to the consumers account. He said, if there is any supply interruption, it will have to be present within a certain time frame, which will be determined by the regulator.
The minister said, DISCOM cannot pass on the burden of its inefficiency to consumers. He said, every rural household will have electricity and LPG connection. Mr. Singh said that 1.95 crore houses will be provided to eligible beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin by 2022.
